Awards And Accolades

In 1961, Auntie Olga was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her kind humanitarian efforts and for her contribution to broadcasting in Guyana.

From her early days as singer, broadcaster, social worker, Dame Olga Lopes Seale has been the receiver of numerous awards and accolades from the thousands of families, church, community and social groups and organizations whom she has touched.  Whether through a simple letter or card from an individual, a plaque or trophy from a group, or the country’s highest national  honours , this woman of the people has  been recognized across all strata of society by all citizens.  She has fostered such hope within poor families for the future of their children, that her archive includes numerous thank you letters and cards, some including photos, showing the development of the little ones, or informing her of the overall progress in the household.  The many greeting cards in the collection also reflect an outpouring of love and support for her work and congratulatory messages on her national achievements.

No honour is too much for a woman who has served Barbados, her adopted country in a most ordinary way.”

“…I was also touched by the way in which she appeared to manifest what I refer to a Mother Teresa-type quality which means she demonstrated the true meaning of Christianity by her work and not just her words…she never preached….her faith like Mother Teresa’s  seemed to motivate her to rise each morning and focus on whom she could help and how much…instead of being concerned about the need to convert us along the way.”

Dame Nita Barrow, Barbados’ first female Governor General, in a personal congratulatory letter to Dame Olga wrote.

“My sincere congratulations.  Your honour is richly deserved.  I am delighted that it has come at this time.  For it is the season when you work for the children….I wish you well.  Good health and continued energy to pursue the many effective contributions you continue to make to our society.”

Many letters in the collection reveal that long before she was knighted people were calling for her to be given the highest award in the island.  Such persons included  John Wickham, Vic Fernandes,  Harold Hoyte, Dagny Sharon (Edgewater Inn), Paul Foster, Jewel S. Bushell  and Desmond Bourne who actually made the recommendation to the Cabinet Secretary that she be so honoured in a letter dated  November 8,1999.
